For Courage by John O’Donohue

“Today, when we stand before crucial thresholds in our lives, we have no rituals to protect, encourage and guide us as we cross over into the unknown. For such crossings we need to find new words … this book Benedictus is an attempt by the Philosopher John O’Donohue (1956 – 2008) to reach into that tenuous territory of change …”

The following poem “For Courage” is from the above book. A number of people who have participated in the 40 Day online Irish Inner Peace Pilgrimage have told me that this poem has been exactly what they needed to hear at a particular moment in their lives. I’ve put a copy of it here for you and remember to experience more of John’s wisdom you can purchase the book at the following link: “Benedictus – a Book of Blessings”

Benedictus by John O'Donohue

For Courage

When the light around you lessens
And your thoughts darken until
Your body feels fear turn
Cold as a stone inside

When you find yourself bereft
Of any belief in yourself
And all you unknowingly
Leaned on has fallen

When one voice commands
Your whole heart,
And it is raven dark,

Steady yourself and see
That is is your own thinking
That darkens your world

Search and you will find
A diamond-thought of light,

Know that you are not alone
And that this darkness has purpose
Gradually it will school your eyes
To find the one gift your life requires
Hidden within this night-corner.

Invoke the learning
Of every suffering
You have suffered.

Close your eyes
Gather all the kindling
About your heart
To create one spark.
That is all you need
To nourish the flame
That will cleanse the dark
Of its weight of festered fear.

A new confidence will come alive
To urge you towards higher ground
Where your imagination
Will learn to engage difficulty
As its most rewarding threshold!
by John O’ Donohue

“It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness” – Chinese saying

There is no doubt that there is a glorification of misery in our world today. Many mornings as I walk past the local shop I see the glorification of misery emblazened all over newspapers and magazines. Yesterday one newspaper, which is choosing to attack one well known person, had as its headline “Big Fat Pig“!  I then listen to the radio and every miserable story you can imagine about the latest so called disaster to hit the world, is broadcast in a belief that we are all innocent victims of this miserable world!!!

The good news of course is that no matter what disaster has hit the world, man made or otherwise since Adam and Eve eat the apple, we’re still here! Not only are we still here, we’re still evolving, learning, growing, reproducing, eating, drinking, laughing, celebrating and much more. And I believe there is more love in the world. Not only is there more love but each of us can make sure that by the time we go to sleep tonight there will be even more. So here’s 7 ways to “light a candle in your day”

1. Be Still to Start Your Day – Before getting caught up in the busyness of the day, take 5 minutes to sit and “tune into” your day. Go somewhere in your house, your garden, your locality where you can simply sit and be still for 5 minutes. Realise that what lies before you is like a painters canvass and that you’re being offered a palette to create your painting for the day. Create a masterpiece!

2. Inspire yourself – listen to your favourite music, read your favourite books, watch your favourite movie. Whatever inspires you fill your mind and heart with it, particularly at the beginning of the day.

3. Inspire others - as you go about your day send your blessings/positive feelings towards those you meet – family, friends, strangers and most of all so called “enemies”. In Ireland there is an old saying when you meet someone which says “Dia dhuit” (which means God be with you). When you say it to someone,  that person would then respond by saying to you “Dia is Muire dhuit” (which means God and Mary be with you). How would you like to greet people today?

4. Offer someone a seat – have you ever been on a bus when its busy and given someone your seat? Sometimes we sit and wait, afraid that they may say “no thanks” and we’ll be rejected and sometimes then its too late. But if you ever have given someone a seat, how has it made you feel? Doesn’t it make us feel good? Be generous with people and always remember no matter how “bad” things are perceived to be, we always have something to give to others. Afterall a smile costs nothing.

5. Exercise – exercise as we all know is great! It fills our body with fresh oxygen, it puts roses on our cheeks, it makes us feel fully alive. No matter what your level of fitness find at least 20 minutes in your day to walk, run, swim, play tennis, cycle or whatever. Just do it!

6. Reclaim Your Power to Better Yourself and the World - there is such an emphasis on putting people down much of the time, in particular blaming people for what is wrong in our lives and our world. What if these people we blame are actually the source of our salvation? Who knows maybe everything is exactly the way it’s supposed to be in order for us to learn what we need to learn in this lifetime? Once we open ourselves to the possibility that this just might be true, we reconnect with our power to change things for the better. And when we change for the better the world changes for the better.

7. Do what you Love - some say we’re being selfish if we’re off doing what we love. This has to be one of the craziest beliefs in the world! I say it’s far more selfish to do what we hate and feel justified to be miserable because of it. Every day invest time in nourishing what you love. If you love gardening, spend time in your garden. If you love writing, write. If you love music, listen, play, create it! If you love being with your kids, be with them in mind, body and spirit. Whatever you love nourish it. Notice that as you do you connect with that wonderful loving part of yourself and thus are a far more loving person to be with. And as you lay to sleep at night you know there’s more love in the world because of you.

Many of us have dreams and unfortunately many have let those dreams die into the distant past. Every now and again however you come across someone who has had the courage to keep their dreams awake. Not only keep them awake but to take the courageous steps necessary to turn those dreams into reality. One such person is Donna Sirianni whom I came across on youtube. Well if this is not an example of someone who is “Daring to Dream” I dont know what is!!!

If today was your last day …

In these days when hundreds of thousands die in a moment of time in Haiti leaving hundreds of thousands more to suffer through incredible hardship, what are we doing in Ireland?

In Ireland those who get paid loads as traffic controllers (I believe over €100,000 plus a huge pension contribution)decided to go on strike and close all airports in the country yesterday. Those on the other side sitting on their beds of nails just keep repeating the mantra – “We’re RIGHT and they’re WRONG”!!!

Those who made the biggest mistakes in the financial history of Ireland are gone to pastures greener to figure out how to spend all the money they’ve been rewarded with as pensions. While the bailed out institutions they’ve left behind  seek out the “small person/family” who made small mistakes but will be punished in BIG ways, some even losing their homes!

Others who were supposed to regulate it all sneaked out  the backdoor and now have to face the daily grind of regulating how much of their vast pensions they’ll spend each day! But they’re in good company with those who managed the creation of jobs, who used the same door to sneak out of,  as they have a lot of experience of flying first class, staying in the worlds best hotels and spending thousands of euro for a meal with friends (all legitimate expenses of course!)

And you may be wondering what the politicians of the country are doing? It’s obvious? They’re arguing about how to fill up pot holes after the recent snow! I suppose its not that surprising really when their old leader, who created the boom but not the bust, and who created much of his own substantial wealth “backing horses” is going from book shop to book shop ready to sign his book and plead with everyone that “it wasent my fault, please love me, I’m a socialist, I’m a people person”!!!

I will admit this isent the usual tone of my blog articles but right now its how I feel. I believe they’re has to be a better way! A way that will be carved out by those who truly value what is important in this life – love for one another, compassion, generosity, kindnesss, integrity, honesty, truth, loyalty, cheerfulness, our childrens lives and education and whatever other values you feel are truly important, values which ensure that as we all sleep at night we know the world is a better place because we have lived!

Most of us cannot fly over to Haiti to help out and its great that so many have of course, but we can make sure that today wherever we are, whatever we’re doing, with whoever we’re with  that someones life has been better because we have lived to truthfully serve!

Well I came across this great video today and its brilliant! Its a band called Nichelback and a track called “If today was your last day” (Hey if you have anything you’d like to add to this article just click on “continue reading” below.)

Enjoy! Sean M Kelly, Be Inspired!
