I’ve often spoken or written about the importance of having a purpose for what you do – your life, your work, your relationships and other important areas of your life. Have a great purpose and you’ll be motivated greatly! A great purpose acts as a lighthouse for the direction we want to go and we find it easier to make decisions because we know what’s really important to us. And when our purpose revolves around helping others we often find the extra energy and motivation to go the extra mile.
No more is this true than in the case of Dick Hoyt and his son Rick. When Rick was born his Dad was basically told to put him into some sort of institution for life and that he would never amount to much because of his extreme paralysis. Luckily enough Dick didn’t listen to such life limiting advice. Instead he nourished his sons talents whatever way possible and now they compete together in Ironman triathlons and Rick has graduated from university. To be inspired and feel the spirit of these two great people watch the video below. It’s amazing and a great example of the power of purpose in a Father/Son relationship:

In 2005 Steve Jobs founder of Apple Computer gave the commencement address to new graduates of Stanford University. It is a brilliant address where he focuses on three inspirational short stories from his life:
The first story is about joining the dots – which addresses in a very interesting way the question why did he drop out of college?
The second story is about love and loss, a story which will inspire anyone who has faced adversity particularly in their career as Steve talks about being fired from the very company that he founded namely Apple computers.
The third story is about death where Steve talks about being diagnosed with cancer and his attitude to life. It’s brilliant!
The video is just over 15 minutes and well worth watching in full and indeed taking notes. Here’s some inspirational quotes from the address which I felt were excellent:

Many of us have dreams and unfortunately many have let those dreams die into the distant past. Every now and again however you come across someone who has had the courage to keep their dreams awake. Not only keep them awake but to take the courageous steps necessary to turn those dreams into reality. One such person is Donna Sirianni whom I came across on youtube. Well if this is not an example of someone who is “Daring to Dream” I dont know what is!!!

In these days when hundreds of thousands die in a moment of time in Haiti leaving hundreds of thousands more to suffer through incredible hardship, what are we doing in Ireland?
In Ireland those who get paid loads as traffic controllers (I believe over €100,000 plus a huge pension contribution)decided to go on strike and close all airports in the country yesterday. Those on the other side sitting on their beds of nails just keep repeating the mantra – “We’re RIGHT and they’re WRONG”!!!
Those who made the biggest mistakes in the financial history of Ireland are gone to pastures greener to figure out how to spend all the money they’ve been rewarded with as pensions. While the bailed out institutions they’ve left behind seek out the “small person/family” who made small mistakes but will be punished in BIG ways, some even losing their homes!
Others who were supposed to regulate it all sneaked out the backdoor and now have to face the daily grind of regulating how much of their vast pensions they’ll spend each day! But they’re in good company with those who managed the creation of jobs, who used the same door to sneak out of, as they have a lot of experience of flying first class, staying in the worlds best hotels and spending thousands of euro for a meal with friends (all legitimate expenses of course!)
And you may be wondering what the politicians of the country are doing? It’s obvious? They’re arguing about how to fill up pot holes after the recent snow! I suppose its not that surprising really when their old leader, who created the boom but not the bust, and who created much of his own substantial wealth “backing horses” is going from book shop to book shop ready to sign his book and plead with everyone that “it wasent my fault, please love me, I’m a socialist, I’m a people person”!!!
I will admit this isent the usual tone of my blog articles but right now its how I feel. I believe they’re has to be a better way! A way that will be carved out by those who truly value what is important in this life – love for one another, compassion, generosity, kindnesss, integrity, honesty, truth, loyalty, cheerfulness, our childrens lives and education and whatever other values you feel are truly important, values which ensure that as we all sleep at night we know the world is a better place because we have lived!
Most of us cannot fly over to Haiti to help out and its great that so many have of course, but we can make sure that today wherever we are, whatever we’re doing, with whoever we’re with that someones life has been better because we have lived to truthfully serve!

Have you ever wondered why so many of us never stick to new years resolutions? Well here’s a couple of reasons
1. Too many resolutions!
We try and change everything at the same time – quit smoking, exercise every day, stop drinking, eat healthy food, get up earlier and whatever else we believe is wrong in our lives! It’s a receipe for failure! And when we dont manage to keep the resolutions we reinforce the behaviour we were trying to stop in the first place.
2. Its pure misery!
We try and change in the same old boring, self denial, self whipping way which again is a receipe for disaster! Even before we’ve started the resolution we often feel miserable thinking about how horrible its going to be!
3. Oh ye of little faith!
We have very little faith in sticking to our new years resolutions because we’ve never succeeded in the past. How many people start a new diet every year, crash out after a couple of weeks and every year actually end up heavier than the year before!!!
If any of the above resonate with you its time for a new simple strategy
1. Focus on one resolution at a time - start exercising more first, then after about 3 weeks (it takes about 3 weeks to form a new habit) focus on something else like eating more healthily or whatever way you wish to improve your life.
2. Replace the old behaviour with one that absolutly excites you – ok there’s no point quitting smoking and just hanging around not knowing what to do with yourself to relax! You MUST replace it with something that is a lot more exciting, enjoyable, life enhancing, brilliant or whatever other positive behaviour you can think of. Every time you think of the behaviour you want to change do what excites you instead and keep doing it until it becomes the new habit that runs in autopilot!
3. Start where success is easy – ok if you’re becoming a healthy non smoker by not smoking anymore focus on today only! Don’t concern yourself with thinking this is it for life!!! How awful!!! None of us know what tomorrow has in store so celebrate you’re new positive behaviour today! Indeed celebrate every success no matter how small. Feel great within yourself. If it’s exercising more start with something simple – walking a few times a week, then running, then swimming or whatever. Celebrate every step of the way.
The bottomline is summed up by E L Thorndikes Law of Reinforcement – “whatever behaviour is reinforced will tend to be repeated” – so keep celebrating the new behaviour you want repeated!
Above all make it FUN! As the following video shows when there’s fun involved we change alot more easily and enjoy the process!

Have you ever wondered how one individual can achieve so much in a lifetime? Have you ever wondered how one individual can positively touch the lives of many many people (particularly childrens lives)? Well one such person is the very inspirational Venezuelan visionary and musician Jose Antonio Abreu.
Jose Antonio Abreu founded El Sistema (“the system”) in 1975 to help poor Venezuelan kids learn to play a musical instrument and be part of an orchestra. 30 years on, El Sistema has seeded 102 youth orchestras — and many happy lives. (www.ted.com) Here he shares his amazing story and unveils a TED Prize wish that could have a big impact in the US and beyond.
After listening to the wisdom of Jose in the above video would you like to watch and listen to one of the youth orchestras he has helped create through El Sistema? It’s amazing! These are all young kids whose lives have been fantastically enhanced by the power of learning music within the positive unconditionally nourishing environment of an El Sistema orchestra. Well here’s another amazing video which movingly demonstrates the inner power of the human Spirit! In times where the only focus seems to be on “whats not working” in our world – the economy, the climate, peace and so on, it would be good for us all to listen to the wisdom which is shared by these two amazing people - Jim Mac Laren from the USA and Emmanuel Ofosu Yoboah from Ghana.
At the age of 22 Jim Mac Laren an all American athletes life was changed dramatically when he was hit by a bus. Believe it or not he became an Iron Man triathlete after that but as you’ll see in the video far tougher challenges lay ahead of Jim. As fate would have it he connects with another one of lifes great heros Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah a one legged man from Ghana.
Whatever challenges we face in our day let us Be Inspired by Jim and Emmanueal to have the courage to face them with the same conviction that we shall overcome.
