Miserable Vs Fun filled New Years Resolutions

Have you ever wondered why so many of us never stick to new years resolutions? Well here’s a couple of reasons

1. Too many resolutions!

We try and change everything at the same time – quit smoking, exercise every day, stop drinking, eat healthy food, get up earlier and whatever else we believe is wrong in our lives! It’s a receipe for failure! And when we dont manage to keep the resolutions we reinforce the behaviour we were trying to stop in the first place.

2. Its pure misery!

We try and change in the same old boring, self denial, self whipping way which again is a receipe for disaster! Even before we’ve started the resolution we often feel miserable thinking about how horrible its going to be!

3. Oh ye of little faith!

We have very little faith in sticking to our new years resolutions because we’ve never succeeded in the past. How many people start a new diet every year, crash out after a couple of weeks and every year actually end up heavier than the year before!!!

If any of the above resonate with you its time for a new simple strategy

1. Focus on one resolution at a time - start exercising more first, then after about 3 weeks (it takes about 3 weeks to form a new habit) focus on something else like eating more healthily or whatever way you wish to improve your life.

2. Replace the old behaviour with one that absolutly excites you – ok there’s no point quitting smoking and just hanging around not knowing what to do with yourself to relax! You MUST replace it with something that is a lot more exciting, enjoyable, life enhancing, brilliant or whatever other positive behaviour you can think of. Every time you think of the behaviour you want to change do what excites you instead and keep doing it until it becomes the new habit that runs in autopilot!

3. Start where success is easy – ok if you’re becoming a healthy non smoker by not smoking anymore focus on today only! Don’t concern yourself with thinking this is it for life!!! How awful!!! None of us know what tomorrow has in store so celebrate you’re new positive behaviour today! Indeed celebrate every success no matter how small. Feel great within yourself. If it’s exercising more start with something simple – walking a few times a week, then running, then swimming or whatever. Celebrate every step of the way.

The bottomline is summed up by E L Thorndikes Law of Reinforcement“whatever behaviour is reinforced will tend to be repeated” – so keep celebrating the new behaviour you want repeated!

Above all make it FUN! As the following video shows when there’s fun involved we change alot more easily and enjoy the process!

Have Fun!

Peace within

Peace Within

Peace Within by Sean M Kelly

When all around you is falling down
To remember their dead
they stain blood on the ground
there’s hate in their eyes
You’ve got to realise
there’s a part of you that needs
to find love too …

When children are used
in a game of hate
sowing seeds
for more violence to create
A father holds his child
in his arms so tight
as the rain from hell falls
from vengeful birds in flight

Peace within me
Peace within you
Let the light of your peace shine through

When toys turn to bombs
which kill and mame
And all you see is difference
And never the same
A child cries loud over his fathers grave
And wonders why he had to be so brave?
Hear it, feel it, deep inside
Your heartfelt wisdom and
let it be your guide.

Peace within me
Peace within you
Let the light of your peace shine through

When all around you are ready to blame
never knowing that they fan the flame
Be not vengeful, be not cruel
History tells us it’s the way of a fool
Seek out peace deep inside
Feel the Love and
let it be your guide

Peace within me
Peace within you
Let the light of your peace shine through

“There is no way to peace, peace is the way” – A.J. Muste

A J MusteSometimes we think that when everything in our life is perfect we will have peace – when we’re in the perfect relationship or when we have loads of money or when we’re out of recession or when we’re in perfect health or whatever other condition we place upon realising peace in our lives. It’s like we put inner peace on hold until everything else is sorted!

When Dr Victor Frankl stood as a prisoner in Auschwitz in the second world war he had been stripped of absolutely every physical possession. He literally stood naked with nothing to his name. Yet when he talks about this moment he said it was one of the most freeing in his life. He realised even though the SS guards were liberated they could never take away his freedom to choose his response- he could choose whether to hate his captors or to find something positive in it all. He realised the power that many of us forget at times – the power to choose our response to any situation that life presents to us. Will our response raise us up to new levels of life or add to the external “burdens” we believe has control over us? Here’s a video where Dr Victor Frankl talks about how people turn around tragedy in their lives:

Recently the famous cyclist Lance Armstrong was in Ireland for a “Livestrong” conference and the Tour of Ireland cycle race. Now here is a person who had cancer and has since won the Tour de France 7 times, a remarkable feat of athleticism even without a previous illness! However perhaps even more admirably Lance has setup one of the greatest cancer charities in the world Livestrong.

The aim of Livestrong is to unite, inspire and empower people affected by cancer. In Lance’s book “Every Second Counts” Lance mentions how his Mother told him to always “turn every negative into a positive“. Well when I thought about his achievement I turned to my own kids when we went to see the start of the Tour of Ireland race and told them about how he has turned a very frightening “negative”, namely a brain tumour, into the most amazing “positives”. And that powerful choice has already helped many many people. Here’s the video from the Livestrong conference in Ireland

Please note I havent said these challenges that come our way in life are necessarily easy, even when looked at with a positive frame of mind. But with a positive frame of mind we will be far more able to rise to the challenges and use them as stepping stones to a better and expanded life.

Last Saturday evening I sat with some great old friends and we sang some songs. One of the songs was “Ride on“. One of my friends spoke about how this song can mean so many different things to different people. So that’s what I’m singing in this video and of course after talking about Lance Armstrong it has the appropriate title. Simply sit back and listen and interpret it in your own glorious way.

Finaly know that no matter what’s happening in our lives we can always choose to find some time to be still and tune into the inner peace that is within us all. Make sure to take a few minutes today maybe in your garden or somewhere else in nature to sit still and notice the beauty that is within you and that is without. Be still and know.

In-Joy,  Sean

Irish Inner Peace Pilgrimage Day 8 – A Tribute to Mothers

Posted by inspire | Posted in Be Inspired, Celebrate Peace, Gratitude, Music, Music for the Soul, Online Courses, Spiritual, World Peace | Posted on 29-09-2009

Very late on Friday evening I got a call asking me to play the bagpipes for a funeral on Monday. It’s always such an honour and a privilege to play at any funeral and this one was no exception. Funerals always let us know what people truly value in their lives.

This deceased lady who I had the honour of piping for died last week at the age of 91. She was a women who after looking after her own seven children looked after her own elderly parents. By all accounts she was an active women right into her elderly years and enjoyed singing and playing bridge everyday. Most impressively she leaves a legacy of  7 children, 33 grandchildren and 17 great grand children! As one of her own children said in her eulogy “eventhough our Mother is now physically gone her love will never die … as it lives on through us“. The love of their Mother will live on for sure in all this offspring but also as was clearly evident at her funeral in the many people whose lives she had lovingly touched.

Elizabeth Kubler Ross, author of ”Death and Dying”  stated in the truly inspirational CD’s Graceful Passages (regarding the moment of our passing) that we’re asked two questions one of them is “how much love were you able to give and recieve?”.

Well this deceased lady will certainly be answering that question with flying colours. In fact I’d say that most if not all Mothers in the world will answer this question with flying colours. All of us have so much to thank our Mothers for. In fact as I listened to the radio on the way home from the funeral I heard stories about children who in the 1950′s in Ireland, were taken from their Mothers, some never to see them again. So if we’ve had the good fortune of sharing time with our Mother, we are some of the fortunate ones.

Todays video, day 8, on this online Irish Inner Peace Pilgrimage is my own personal  Tribute to All Mothers, past, present and future. The song I sing was sung at the funeral yesterday, it’s called Jesus Remember Me and it’s a song from the Taizé community in France.

The final reflection at the funeral yesterday was a few lines that I guess one of this ladys children wrote:

“We asked her once and often,
Who was her favourite one?
Aren’t I your perfect offspring?
She said there’s no such one!
You are all my favourites!
She would say I love you all the same
And that she did for sure
In her own wonderful way”

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dilís”
(this is the Irish language for ”may her faithful soul be at the right hand of God”. )

Seán M. O’Cellaigh (Sean M Kelly)
