Never, never, never Give Up!

The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing – Albert Einstein

A whispering air of excited anticipation filled the hall. All pupils and teachers were waiting for one of their great heroes, someone who had affected all their lives and indeed, the whole world.

There was total silence as the old man walked onto the stage. Slowly, very slowly, he crossed the hall, using his walking stick to steady himself. The room filled with his inspiring presence. He stopped in the middle of the stage and turned to face his audience. He looked around, using his eyes to connect with all those present.

He stood still. He lifted his walking stick and hit the floor hard, sending a clap of thunder throughout the school hall. Shivers went down pupils’ spines. Some were moved to tears. Teachers were deeply grateful to be in his presence. Slowly his frail arm raised again and he hit the floor with his walking stick, sending out another wave of thunder. There was silence for what seemed like eternity. He raised his arm and hit the floor with his walking stick for a third time. After the echoing sound faded, silence prevailed.

The old man stood still. As if connecting with everyone individually he took a deep breath into his old lungs. As he exhaled, his message was carried to the heart of every living being in the hall. In a thunderous voice, Sir Winston Churchill affirmed:

“Never, never, never give up!”
