Marathon Dreams & Top 3 Inspirational Videos for Running a Marathon

by inspire on November 1, 2010

Dick Hooper Dublin City Marathon 1980 I stood among the crowds watching and cheering as one of my best friends came into the last mile of the Dublin city marathon, Ireland in 1980. It was the first ever Dublin city marathon. A shiver went down my spine as he came closer, his body aching and roaring, “please stop and give me a rest!” while his spirit urged him on. It was very moving to watch.

His heart started to beat faster as he turned the last corner onto St Stephens Green, Dublin. The culmination of hours and hours, miles and miles of training was now in full view before him, his dream – the Finish line. Masses of people roared and cheered, inspired by the conviction and tenacity of all the runners about to realise their dream.

As my friend got nearer to the finish, he mustered up some last bits of strength to come in strong. His leg muscles aching, his arms weakened by hours of running, yet his spirit commanded “Finish Strong!”. With his last bit of strength he smiled and raised his arms to celebrate as he passed through the finish line. His dream had come true.

It’s now 30 years since my friend completed the marathon and fulfilled his dream. But not only did he fulfill his dream he inspired me so much as I watched him finish that I too decided to run a marathon. In fact I’ve since done 6 and countless triathlons including two half ironman triathlons since. In those few moments watching my good friend he changed the course of my life forever.

My friend now lives on the other side of the world and unfortunately I rarely see him yet his inspiration lives on and continues to grow – I’ve now signed up for a Ironman in Austria in 2011.

Why am I telling you this? Because we MUST always remember that when we go after our dreams it’s not only our dreams that are affected because we also inspire many others to go after their dreams. If for no other reason let this be one which keeps you moving forward when the going gets tough – your dreams will inspire others, your dreams will inspire the world to be a better place, your dreams will help those who have lost their way to find it again. Your Dreams are vital to the world. Go after them!

Next week I have two brothers and a sister-in-law who are also realising their dream to run in the New York City marathon 2010. As they do they will not only fulfill their amazing dream but they will inspire many others to draw on their inner resources and conquer their dreams.

These are the people to salute and admire in our world today. These are the people who are realising their dreams and in so doing they demonstrate what Martin Luther King Jr (1929-1968) so eloquently said:

“I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream.”
